I thought the entry was very deep in quality and well presented. The show site was beautiful and although a little warm, the weather cooperated. In all the classes I could find the outline and movement that I was looking for and in some classes very little separated the placements. The negative things I found were dogs with the correct length of body, but not the correct length of rib cage. In some of the entries the short rib cage/long loin caused the sides of the dog to bounce up and down on the move. I also found several with ears that were too small, spoiling the expression. Again, my thanks to the club for inviting me to judge. It was a wonderful experience.

2000 PUPPY SWEEPSTAKES

Best in SweepsFoxtale’s Phoenix
Best of Opposite SweepsBrogan Bell Bottoms

carol asteris (renefield)

Thank you for inviting me to judge the sweepstakes at your specialty. The show committee members were a real joy. Special thanks to Anthony Pepe for seeing to my every need during my stay and to Andria Filipponi-Maloney, my most helpful ring steward.

Overall, outlines were very good. Because of the high quality of the exhibits I was able to be very picky about heads. Several exhibits were exaggerated in and through the stop; this gave a look which I did not find very “corgi-like”. I saw many long muzzles; our Standard still calls for proportions of 3 to 5.

The long grass and uneven ground made it difficult to evaluate coming and going, so I relied heavily on sidegait. I looked for well balanced movement with firm, quiet toplines. The Standard calls for a level topline, and I interpret this to mean when the dog is in motion as well as when standing.

My judge’s gifts were most thoughtful, and I will always enjoy them.
