History of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of the Garden State (New Jersey)
August 1984
Our New Jersey club was founded in August of 1984 with 16 charter members.
1985
Our first match show was held in June of 1985 and the American Kennel Club then recognized our chosen name, Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of the Garden State, in October of that same year. We incorporated as a non-profit organization in the state of New Jersey on July 7, 1988. From our original 16 members, the Club has now grown to over 60 members/families.From our beginnings with that first match, the PWCCGS went on to hold our required AKC recognized “B” matches and then our required “A” matches. The results of successfully holding these match competitions meant that we then were approved to hold AKC-licensed events where championship points are awarded. The Club now holds a Pembroke Welsh Corgi match show every year, which supports competition in both obedience and breed.
1998
We incorporated as a non-profit organization in the state of New Jersey on July 7, 1988. From our original 16 members, the Club has now grown to over 60 members/families. Our first Pembroke Welsh Corgi Funday was held in April of 1996 and our first Pembroke Welsh Corgi Specialty was held in May that same year. Our Specialty has been held every year since and attracts corgi breeders and breed fanciers from near and far. The Specialty provides competition platforms in breed conformation, obedience and rally. Our Funday event is usually held every two years, and brings together corgi owners from all over the tri-state area and even beyond for a day of games, picnicking and collegiality. We have also held a Herding Trial or Herding Instinct Test each year since 1988
1991
In November of 1991, the PWCCGS established its Pembroke Welsh Corgi Rescue Program. Since then, the PWCCGS Rescue has been the main beneficiary of our Funday Sunday event. PWCCGS Rescue performs the important tasks of evaluating, fostering and placing our rescue corgis. We can always use additional volunteers to help with these efforts.
2001
In 2001, the Club held its first Agility Trial , and this is now a regular event on our club calendar. The trial provides a competition platform for dogs of all breeds, with special awards for high scoring Pembroke Welsh corgis in the various events. In addition to those events that we hold directly, we actively sponsor — through sweeps or supported entries — a number of other shows in our own and immediately surrounding areas each year.
