2019 Speciality

PEMBROKE WELSH CORGI CLUB OF THE GARDEN STATE

SEPTEMBER 7, 2019

Regular Classes:  Vicki Sandage, DVM (Sandfox)

Sweepstakes:  Juliana du Pree (Curig)

Thank you for inviting me to judge your specialty. It was a very enjoyable assignment. The depth of quality was outstanding. Most of the exhibits had good type and movement. Several of the puppies were a bit unsettled in the ring making evaluation a challenge. I would think that time and care will simply solve that problem but today it did effect a few placements. Temperaments (other then the bouts of nerves) seemed excellent. Outlines and movement were generally very good. As I have found in the last few assignments I have done, the exceptional head is just that- the exception. That is probably just the perfectionist in me as most had good ears, eyes, proportions and planes. But there were some individuals with short muzzles, exaggerated stops and/or a fill under the eyes which distracts from the beauty of head piece.  Toplines in the older classes were usually very good though definitely a problem in the younger classes! The optimist in me would say that is a stage! I was pleasantly surprised to find a good number of individuals with balance front to rear.  This lack of balance (usually a straight shoulder and/or short upper arm with a good or even over angulated rear) is a problem that seemed distinctly better in this entry. Presentation was very good and everyone was extremely pleasant. When I get the opportunity to judge, I try to stick to the motto that the worst fault a dog can have is a lack of virtues. I think it is important to treasure the outstanding virtues and not get mislead by any particular, obvious fault. Thank you for an enjoyable day of going over your lovely Pembrokes.

SWEEPSTAKES

Judge: Juliana du Pree (Curig)

I am humbled to be asked by peers to provide my opinion on their puppies and veterans – thank you for the honour. I can’t thank the show committee enough for their hospitality, specifically Carol Braunstein for her help and great conversations! Congratulations to the club for putting on such a nice show. I will enjoy the handmade bag done by Linda Butsch, it will be well used!

The entry was not sizeable, but the quality of the dogs was outstanding. Dogs were well presented, groomed, and sportsmanship was wonderful. Correct outlines and balance were present in a great many of the exhibits as well as balanced movement from the side. Trends to note; in the effort to achieve side gait, clean coming and going is being sacrificed. Thank you so much to the exhibitors who entered their puppies and veterans to me.

PUPPY DOGS 6 TO 9 MONTHS (5 entered, 1 absent)

1.   AUBREY’S POWER OF GOLD ((GCH Ciregna That’s Amore x CH Aubrey’s Go For The Gold) Breeders: Cynthia M. Savioli & Vincent J. Savioli. Owners: Cynthia M. Savioli &Dong Seok Yoo & Vincent Savioli. Lovely sable boy who was just of age. He had a correct outline with good reach of neck, level topline, and balanced angled front and back. Slightly thick in muzzle and in need of a bit more chisel under his eye to make his head even better. Correct eye colour and shape with good pigment. He was smooth moving as his angles suggested.

2.   MELYN RHOS TRUE COLUORS Red boy with a lovely outline. Good reach of neck and a level topline. Shoulder was well set and was balanced in the rear with a good turn of stifle. His head was a bit snipey at this age with more underjaw needed. His eye was correct in colour, set and shape. Correct moving from the side but tended to be wide going away.

3.   AUBREY’S GOLD STANDARD A nice young tri that has good angles to grow into. He had a correct shoulder and reach of neck. Nice bone for his size. He was smooth moving with good reach and drive though lost his topline a bit on the move at this age. A bit close behind. A heavier head that could use a bit more chiseling under the eye.

4.   WINDHAMLAIR RED KNIGHT AT THE RODEO Pretty sable boy with nice reach of neck and good layback though a better return of upper arm would complete the picture in front. He had nice length and  good turn of stifle. Good head with a slightly high ear set at this age. Lost his topline on the move.

PUPPY DOGS 9 TO 12 MONTHS (6 entered, 1 absent)

1.   BEAUMANNOR BROGAN SAINT PATRICK  Promising tri boy who was a little shorter cast at this age. Good reach of neck flowing into a level topline. He was balanced in his angulation. 12 TO 15 MONTH DOGS (3 entered, 0 absent)

1.   RANPRI PUPPET MASTER A somewhat more extreme sable boy. He was long and low with lots of scope and angulation. Could be slightly shorter in loin. He had a nice reach of neck and level topline standing and moving. Lovely moving from the side but tended close both from and rear both coming and going. Head proportions were correct but a more defined stop would complete the look.

2.   CORGARD JORASH SEVENTY SEVEN SUNSET STRIP A tri boy who pushed hard for the top spot in this class. He was shorter cast than the one above. Well set shoulder and good reach of neck. Pretty head though a bit more definition under the eye would make the expression a bit foxier. He was easy moving in all directions but tended to roach over the loin.

3.   HONEYFOX BUBBALICIOUS JONES Red and white with a correct outline and good reach of neck. His shoulder was well laid back but he needed more return of upper arm and tended to be close standing. Nice rear angles. Typey head with good proportions, ear set and shape, and eye. Moderate mover.

4.   CORGARD JORASH RED SAILS AT SUNSET JORASH Paler red boy with a nice outline and good reach of neck. More moderately angled than those above. A shorter upper arm caused some bounce over the withers on the move. Correct head proportions with good eye colour.

15 TO 18 MONTH DOGS (1 entered, 0 absent)

1.   AUBREY’S SUNSHINE OF YOUR LOVE AT STARFYRE Lovely outline and reach of neck on this paler red boy. Lovely shoulder with good layback and return of upper arm, good prosternum and long ribbing. His head was pretty, but a slightly darker eye and larger ear would complete the picture, excellent pigmentation. He held his topline well on the move and moved with good reach and drive. It was a pleasure to award him BEST OF OPPOSITE SEX IN SWEEPSTAKES

PUPPY BITCHES 6 TO 9 MONTHS (2 entered, 0 absent)

1.   CARADOCX SWEETBAY MAGNOLIA OF WYNFOX A very pretty RHT with a lovely outline. She had good reach of neck and a level topline standing. Well set back shoulder and a nice prosternum. It was my pleasure to award her BEST IN SWEEPSTAKES.

2.   BEAUMANNOR BROGAN PERRIER JOUET A more moderate red bitch who was a bit higher on leg than the one above. Nice reach of neck. She lost her topline on the move with a bit of a roach over her loin.
